The original Styx was a scientific minded orc who wanted to study the amber of the World Tree, a magical substance that allowed users to share their minds and do other magic. However, he became addicted, turning his back on his family and accidentally transforming himself into a much smaller creature. The amber gave him the ability to create clones of varying intelligence and lifespan. One clone was created specifically to help him regain access to the World Tree. Original Styx intended to study the heart of the tree until he could find a way to either turn himself back into an orc or commit suicide. The clone refused to obey and chose to destroy the tree in order to free himself from the original's control. The original Styx died along with the tree, but the clone survived without any memories except for the name "Styx". He accidentally created a huge number of mindless clones of his own too, becoming the father of goblins. This meant that for the next hundred years anyone who saw Styx would assume that he was a mindless pest. This made his life very interesting, especially when the elves learned that Amber could be extracted from goblin blood. Styx turned to assassination and spying to support himself. He decided to try to stop using Amber after getting tired of lack of privacy in his own mind. Currently he's not using it but is easily tempted.
Meanwhile, the human race had become a single Empire. This was done mostly peacefully through alliance, but since it was all united under a single state religion there was a great deal of persecution of small groups and magic users. A leader who hated all nonhumans took charge, sparking war with the elves and enslaving the orcs.
Much later, Styx was paid by the Resistance to team up with a headstrong young orc named Arkhai on a mission to kill the Emperor. Along the way, Styx regained memories of the original Styx and befriended Arkhail. Unfortunately, the entire assassination plot turned out to be a ploy by the Emperor's advisor to turn the elves against the orcs. By murdering him, Styx and Arkhail accidentally made things worse for the orcs, but at least the resistance movement against the empire actually grew a bit stronger.
Personality: Styx prides himself on being a hard boiled survivor who savors even the smallest comforts. He wants to live no matter how rough that life might be. It can be extremely rough, considering that in his world people immediately think he's a non-sentient pest. He expects that people he meets will be "bastards" only out for themselves. This means he's untrustworthy and quite nasty himself. Yet Styx's greatest regret was making Arkhai the orc think Styx had sold him into slavery. It was all part of a plan to help Arkhai but Styx regretted the unhappiness he caused his orc friend. Clearly Styx is capable of loyalty and not just because he needs to have a good reputation to get clients. Styx's heart may be tiny and shriveled but it's there. Though he's an assassin, he takes no great satisfaction in killing. Styx tries not to kill people unnecessarily. Sometimes. Unless they just get in the way. Or unless he's taking personal revenge. His heart may be there but it's also tiny and shriveled.
Above all else, Styx fears losing his mind and individuality. He despised having other people's thoughts in his head when he was using Amber. When Styx the clone encountered another speech-capable clone version of himself he had a minor breakdown that ended in murdering the clone. "There's no one else like me" he announces proudly even though he has hundreds, maybe thousands of clones. Even his habit of keeping up a constant sarcastic monologue in his head is probably because he's afraid of losing his ability to speak and think. Styx does show good analytical abilities and planning skills. He's often very curious about how things work.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Styx has a history of substance abuse. While he doesn't actually get a thrill from killing, he's still a selfish, murderous bastard who is easily tempted into revenge and believes in doing anything he can to survive.
Sins: Murder, theft (a lot of murder and theft), revenge, cheating, arson, lies, envy, greed, spite, gluttony (drug), destruction of property
Powers/Abilities: His abilities include reading, basic chemistry, parkour, assassination, seeing in the dark, and being very, very quiet. Powers only work when he has ingested Amber, but he can become invisible, create temporary clones, and make poisonous spit.
